While India had already secured the T20I series with two wins, fans expected them to give their all in the third and final match, leaving no stone unturned. However, things did not go in their favour as four wickets fell in quick succession, with Sri Lankan bowlers aiming to avoid a clean sweep at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

After being asked to bat, India, which rested Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Rishabh Pant, and Arshdeep Singh for this game, saw wickets fall for Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, Rinku Singh, and skipper Suryakumar Yadav.

India was rocked early as Jaiswal was dismissed for 10 off 9 balls. Samson, who had a chance to contribute significantly, fell for a duck on just four balls. Fans who hoped to see Rinku Singh shine up the order were disappointed as he was out for just one run. The captain, Suryakumar Yadav’s departure for 8 off 9 balls further dashed the hopes of Indian fans.

For Sri Lanka, only three bowlers were used, each causing havoc in the Indian batting lineup. Maheesh Theekshana took two wickets, while Chamindu Wickramasinghe and Asitha Fernando contributed one each. Currently, only Shubman Gill has managed to stay at the crease, now joined by Shivam Dube. After 7 overs, India has posted 35 runs, losing their top four batsmen. Gill has scored 11 runs off 11 balls, and fans hope he and Dube can accelerate the score.

At the toss, which was delayed due to a wet outfield, Lankan skipper Charith Asalanka said, "We are going to bowl first. The pitch looks dry. There was a batting collapse earlier; when the ball gets older, it becomes harder to bat. We have planned a bit differently. One change: Wickramasinghe comes in for Shanaka."
