Day 1 of the first Test between India and Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai saw Indian skipper Rohit Sharma's short innings end! He faced 19 balls and scored 6 runs before departing to Hasan Mahmud's well-bowled delivery. Interestingly, in the 3.2 overs, Hasan Mahmud almost got the Indian captain's wicket, but Rohit escaped the LBW appeal.

When Hasan Mahmud made a big appeal for LBW, umpire Rod Tucker shook his head. Najmul Hossain Shanto sent it upstairs, and replays showed the ball had pinned Rohit on the back leg, but it brushed the front pad first. UltraEdge confirmed no bat was involved, and ball-tracking showed it clipping the top of the middle stump (umpire’s call), allowing Rohit to survive.

Unhappy with the decision, Hasan Mahmud returned for his next over. He bowled a good-length ball around off that slightly seamed away, opening up the Indian captain. Rohit defended with soft hands, but the outside edge carried to second slip, where Shanto crouched to snaffle it with both hands. The Indian captain had to depart for 6 (19) [4s-1].

Not just Rohit Sharma, the Bangladesh bowler, also got the better of Shubman Gill, who faced 8 balls before departing for a duck.

As for the match, 9 overs have been completed, and the Men in Blue have posted 34 runs for the loss of two wickets. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is looking in good form and has been joined by Virat Kohli.

Bangladesh elected to field after winning the toss, marking only the ninth time a visiting team has put India into bat first in a Test match on home soil. Six of the previous eight instances ended in draws, while Australia secured 10-wicket victories in the remaining two, at Wankhede in 2001 and Eden Gardens in 1969. The most recent case was a rain-affected draw against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in 2017. (West Indies also chose to bowl first against Afghanistan in Lucknow in 2019, winning by 9 wickets.)

Interestingly, the last time India fielded three fast bowlers in a home Test was also against Bangladesh. In both Tests of the 2019 series—in Indore and the day-night match in Kolkata—India featured Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, and Mohammed Shami in their XI.
