IND vs BAN 2nd Test: Is India's WTC final hopes in jeopardy if Kanpur Test is washed out? Here's what we know

After losing two full days and some overs on Day 1 as well, the chances of the 2nd Test between India and Bangladesh at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, many are questioning if the match is going to be abandoned and end in a draw. On Day 1, only 35 overs were possible after the start was delayed due to a wet outfield. The game was later halted due to bad light, followed shortly by rain.

Bangladesh, aiming for a series-levelling win in Kanpur, began the day at 107-3 and had Mushfiqur Rahim (6*) and Mominul Haque (40*) at the crease, ready to start Day 2 on a high. However, repeated rainfall has kept the covers on and saw Day 2 and 3 be abandoned without a single ball bowled. While conditions are expected to improve on Days 4 and 5, a draw looms large due to the time already lost to rain.

What happens to India's WTC final chances if the Kanpur Test is washed out?

India currently sits at the top spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) table, with seven wins in 10 matches and a percentage win of 71.67. A 2-0 whitewash against Bangladesh would have further strengthened their chances of making the final for the third time straight and will require just three more wins from their remaining five chances.

However, if the Kanpur Test ends in a draw, Bangladesh and India would split the six points, making India's route to the final even more difficult. The Men in Blue will need to win at least two of the five games in the Border-Gavaskar series against Australia later this year, and also whitewash New Zealand in their upcoming three-Test home series, to guarantee a spot.
