After the men's team went on to defeat South Africa in the recently held ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 Final, it was the women's team who followed suit by defeating the Proteas women by 10 wickets in a one-off Test held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

The Indians dominated in home conditions, posting 603 runs before declaring. Despite bowling out the South African women for 266 and enforcing a follow-on, they managed to dismiss them again for 373 runs, only gaining a slim 36-run lead, which India chased down quickly.

Credit must be given to the visitors, who after Day 1, when everyone thought the match might end by the second half of the third day, showed resilience and hinted at a promising future.

Shafali Verma's double-century, Smriti Mandhana's 149, and Sneh Rana's sensational 10-wicket haul were standout performances for India. But surely the match will be remembered for South Africa's gritty resilience across nearly 240 overs in challenging conditions.

Despite being bowled out for 266 in the first innings, the Proteas Women rallied with centuries from Laura Wolvaardt and Sune Luus, supported by Nadine de Klerk's efforts, extending the contest until the final session.

In the morning session, India took three wickets, conceding 70 runs over thirty overs. Needing just five more wickets for victory, India faced a hard-fought battle.

De Klerk spent 213 minutes at the crease, achieving her maiden Test fifty off 174 balls, including seven boundaries. By tea, South Africa were 336 for 8, trailing by just one run, suggesting they could salvage a draw if de Klerk maintained her steadfastness.

South Africa had briefly taken the lead, but it was a modest 36 runs. Shafali and Shubha Satheesh, sent in before Smriti Mandhana, had 9.2 overs to chase down the target.

This match at Chepauk marked the return of women's Tests for the first time since 1976 at the venue. The attention will now turn to the upcoming T20Is in a few days.
