Not the start Sri Lanka was expecting after they won the toss and opted to bat first against South Africa in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. The Lanka side were bowled out for just 77 runs in 19.1 overs - marking their lowest score in T20I cricket history.

Pacer Anrich Nortje was in excellent form, claiming 4 wickets in his 4 overs while conceding just 7 runs. Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada also contributed with two wickets each, and Ottneil Baartman secured one dismissal.

For Sri Lanka, opener Pathum Nissanka departed for 3 of 8, while Kusal Mendis scored 19 off 30 balls. Skipper Wanindu Hasaranga and Sadeera Samarawickrama both departed for ducks, and Kamindu Mendis managed just 11 off 15 balls. Angelo Mathews scored 16 off 16, but Charith Asalanka (6 off 9), Dasun Shanaka (9 off 10), Matheesha Pathirana (0 off 4), and Nuwan Thushara (0 off 4) struggled. Maheesh Theekshana remained not out for 7 but faced 16 balls.

The two teams are placed in Group D along with Bangladesh, Netherlands, and Nepal. Only the top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eight stage, where they will be divided into two groups of four to vie for semi-final berths.
