The Men in Blue skipper came in after Gill's dismissal and went on to score his half-century in just 22 balls.

Currently, after 17 overs, India has posted 181 runs and lost four wickets with all-rounder Hardik Pandya (9 off 10) departing. Rishabh Pant (32 off 28) is at the crease along with Riyan Parag (1 off 1).
Earlier, Gill and Jaiswal posted 73 runs within 6 overs. However, Dilshan Madushanka was brought in and dismissed Gill, and later, Wanindu Hasaranga got the better of Jaiswal. Both batters fell one after the other in two different overs. Shubman Gill looked like he had found his form, scoring 34 off 16 balls, including 6 fours and 1 six, while Jaiswal added 40 runs in 21 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes.

At the toss, Sri Lanka won and opted to field in the first of the three-match T20I series. Captain Charith Asalanka mentioned that the side was going with a 6-5 (batters-bowlers) combination. Suryakumar Yadav spoke about his relationship with new coach Gautam Gambhir, saying, "What me and him (Gambhir) have had for so many years is special." The Men in Blue left out Shivam Dube, Sanju Samson, Khaleel Ahmed, and Washington Sundar.
