It's almost expected now that if a match is played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Ravichandran Ashwin will score a century! After a rough start on Day 1 of the first Test between India and Bangladesh, Ashwin, along with Ravindra Jadeja, stabilized India's innings, taking the score past 300 runs.
After reaching his fifty in the 59th over, Ashwin went on to score his century, bringing up his sixth Test hundred in the 77th over—his second at his home ground. He came in when India was in trouble - 144/6 - but confidently played his shots, putting Bangladesh on the back foot as he smashed 100 off 108 balls. This was his back-to-back 100 at Chepauk, the previous coming against England in 2021.
As he raised his bat to acknowledge the applause and cheers, a big smile spread across his face, as well as among his Indian teammates and his father, who was watching from the stands. Fans on X (formerly known as Twitter) praised his innings, saying he played an ODI-style knock in a Test match.

Earlier, Bangladesh chose to field after winning the toss, becoming only the ninth visiting team to put India in to bat first in a Test match on home soil. Interestingly, the last time India fielded three fast bowlers in a home Test was also against Bangladesh. In the 2019 series, India deployed Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, and Mohammed Shami in both Tests—in Indore and the day-night match in Kolkata.
