After finally dismissing India on Day 2 of the first Test between India and Bangladesh, the visitors did not anticipate their batting to start so poorly. They lost three wickets before the lunch break, leaving them struggling at 26 for 3, with all wickets being clean bowled. At the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Jasprit Bumrah drew first blood, dismissing Shadman Islam for 2 off 6.

Later, in the 8th over, Akash Deep struck twice, quickly removing Zakir Hasan (3 off 22) and Mominul Haque (0 off 1). On the hat-trick ball, Team India set up an aggressive field with four slips, a gully, a deep short-leg, and a leg gully, but the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim managed to fend the ball away towards the gully.

In this session, 7 wickets fell, including the remaining Indian wickets, as they were all out for 376. Bangladesh's new-ball pair, Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud, took the last four Indian wickets. Ravindra Jadeja was denied a century, falling for his overnight score 86. Akash Deep (17 off 30), R Ashwin (113 off 133), and Bumrah (7 off 9) departed soon after.

On Day 1, Ashwin scored a century after India's rough start. He came in when India struggled at 144/6 but played confidently, putting Bangladesh on the back foot with a century off 108 balls. India ended Day 1 at 339 for 6. Yashasvi Jaiswal (56 off 118), Rohit Sharma (6 off 19), Shubman Gill (0 off 8), Virat Kohli (6 off 6), Rishabh Pant (39 off 52), and KL Rahul (16 off 52) fell at regular intervals. Jadeja was unbeaten on 40 off 54 at stumps, with Ashwin on 54 off 61.
