Biggest shock of Paris Olympics! Vinesh Phogat defeats defending champion Yui Susaki of Japan to reach last 8

What an incredible turn of events! Most expected Vinesh Phogat to lose against Japan's Yui Susaki in their Round of 16 clash in the women's 50kg category, given that Susaki is the defending champion and a legendary figure in wrestling. With Susaki having lost only three times in her career, many fans believed Vinesh would be heading to the repechage for the bronze medal.

But Vinesh Phogat stunned everyone to progress to the quarter-finals. Throughout the match, she trailed as Yui was awarded two points for passivity. However, Vinesh made a dramatic comeback in the final moments, levelling the score and then gaining an extra point due to technical superiority.

Vinesh Phogat defeated Yui Susaki, who won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics without conceding a single point. Yui had only lost three matches in her career prior to her clash against Vinesh, who gave her her fourth loss.

Soon after she won the bout, Japan challenged the result, but it was visible that the Indian had won and Vinesh let out a roar as she knew she had done the unthinkable. It is a known fact how much this win would mean to her, after all the issues she faced at home. 

Fans were in disbelief and took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to declare this as the biggest shock of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Vinesh Phogat will now face Ukraine's Oksana Livach in the quarter-finals at 4:10 PM IST. It will be fascinating to see if the Indian wrestler can make the journey to the gold medal now. 

Meanwhile, in another spectacular breakthrough for India, defending champion Neeraj Chopra qualified for the final round on his first attempt, throwing 89.34m. He will now compete for the medal on August 8 at 11:50 PM IST.
