It seems like the scrutiny on Virat Kohli from former cricketers does not end. Now, Indian veteran spinner Amit Mishra has made interesting observations on Kohli and made a remark that has enraged the 'King's' fan base. Mishra also revealed additional details about the well-known clash between Kohli and Gambhir during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.
According to Mishra, who played under Kohli's leadership from 2015 to 2017, the former captain's demeanour changed alongside his responsibilities. He also compared Kohli to Rohit Sharma, claiming that the World Cup-winning skipper has been constant in his personality throughout his career.
Mishra stated that his relationship with Kohli grew differently, attributing this to a shift in the batter's mentality over time. He felt that Kohli's shift has resulted in a narrower group of close friends within the Indian team. Mishra highlighted a considerable decline in his connection with Kohli, despite playing nine Test matches under his captaincy. He stated that their link eroded with time, resulting in a nearly total communication breakdown.
"I have seen Virat change a lot. We had almost stopped talking. When you get fame and power, they think people are reaching out to them for a purpose. I was never one of those. I have known Cheeku since the time he was 14, when he used to eat Samosas when he needed Pizza every night. But there is a huge difference in the Cheeku I knew and Virat Kohli the captain. Whenever he meets me, he is very respectful, but it's obviously not the same anymore," Mishra concluded.
When asked about the fight with Gautam Gambhir, he stated that it was Gambhir who sought out Kohli to address their issues. He also stated that Kohli should have taken the initiative in apologizing, but he praised Gambhir for his compassion in starting the reconciliation.
"I saw a good thing about Gautam. Virat Kohli didn't go towards him, Gautam went towards him. He went and asked, 'How are you, how’s your family?' So it was Gautam who ended the feud and not Kohli," Amit said.
"Gautam showed his big heart at that time. It should have been Kohli who should have gone and ended the feud. He should have gone and said, 'Gauti bhai, let's end this,'" he added.
Kohli and Gambhir are poised to work together again after the former opener was named the new head coach of the India men's team. Gambhir will take over the role from Rahul Dravid and will start his stint against Sri Lanka on July 27.
