Nisha Dahiya's quarter-final bout in the women's freestyle 68kg category against Sol Gum Pak of the People's Republic of Korea at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Monday (August 5) was painful to watch. Just a minute away from securing a semi-final spot, Dahiya, who was 8-2 up, dislocated her finger and appeared to be in immense pain. Despite her injury, she continued to fight, but the North Korean wrestler took advantage and tied the score at 8-8.
Unfortunately, Dahiya was then heard screaming in pain again, and it seemed she might have broken her elbow or shoulder. Despite her severe injury, she continued to compete but ultimately lost the bout 8-10. Fans who witnessed her struggle described the scenes as heartbreaking. However, many fans on X (formerly known as Twitter) praised her bravery and fighting spirit, expressing hope that this young Indian wrestler will make a strong comeback.
Following the result, an upset Nisha broke down into tears and was escorted off of the arena by her coaches. She also received a standing ovation from fans present at the arena for her determination to play despite suffering injury.
Nisha can still compete for a medal in the repechage round if Pak wins her semi-final and moves on to the final. However, her participation in the Paris Olympics may have been cut short due to an injury.
Earlier on the same day, Nisha Dahiya defeated Ukraine's Tetiana Sova 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. The Indian wrestler trailed 1-4 at the end of the first round, but she scored five points in the second round to complete a comeback.
