However, what's important to note is that this silent hug came just as they reached the crease to bat in their final T20I game. Fans believe the two knew it was going to be the last time they would bat together in this format and shared a side hug before facing the South African bowlers in Barbados. The video has since been going viral, especially on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Both Indian cricket legends played a key role in India's triumph at the 2024 World Cup, ending the country's 11-year wait for a global title. The captain was in top form and was the top scorer for India in the tournament, with 257 runs in eight innings at an average of 36.71 and a strike rate of 156.70. The 'Hitman' became the first Indian cricketer to win the T20 World Cup trophy twice. He was part of the side that won the title under MS Dhoni's captaincy in 2007. Rohit, post the win, became only the third Indian captain, after Kapil Dev and Dhoni, to win an ICC trophy.
As for Kohli, while he was known for having stellar performances in ICC tournaments, 2024 was not his best year. However, as they say, big players perform when the team needs them most. He scored 76 off 59 balls after wickets kept falling around him. He won the Player of the Match (POTM) award in the final and became only the second cricketer in the world, after MS Dhoni, to win all three ICC white-ball senior titles.
Now, the two, who have announced their retirement from the shortest format of the game, leave T20Is as two of the highest run-getters in this format. Rohit played 159 matches and scored 4,231 runs, including a record five centuries. As for Kohli, he has played 125 games and scored 4,188 runs, with one century to his name.
