Chasing down the below-par total of 144 runs set by Mumbai Indians (MI), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) encountered a run-out incident that has stirred up controversy online. In Match 48 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Ayush Badoni was run out in the 18.1 over, but it was not a clean dismissal, requiring the third umpire to make a decision, which ultimately favoured MI.

So why has the run-out become controversial? It all unfolded during Hardik Pandya's over. Ayush Badoni slapped the ball past point, and Naman Dhir at deep cover made a good throw towards the wicketkeeper. Ishan Kishan collected it well, but he initially missed whipping the bails off. By this time, Badoni had made a dive, though it was a clumsy one, causing his bat to pop up as he dived. While his bat went beyond the line, it did not seem to touch the ground, and Ayush Badoni was given out at 6(6) [4s-1].

However, this wicket has prompted many to take to X (formerly known as Twitter) to discuss whether it was a fair decision by the third umpire.

As for the clash, this game at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium almost went down to the wire. MI fought till the end but ultimately lost in the final over. LSG won by 4 wickets in 19.2 overs again at home, marking their sixth win of the season and moving them to third on the table.

For LSG, KL Rahul (28 off 22) got a start but failed to capitalize, while his new partner Arshin Kulkarni departed for a duck. Marcus Stoinis was in top form, scoring 62 off 45, while Deepak Hooda departed for 18 off 18. Ashton Turner (5 off 9) did not contribute much, while Nicholas Pooran remained not out for 14 off 14.

MI skipper Hardik Pandya picked up two wickets, while Mohammad Nabi, Nuwan Thushara, and Gerald Coetzee claimed one each.

Speaking of MI, their top order collapsed within the Powerplay, managing just 28 runs and losing four wickets. However, the two left-handers, Ishan Kishan (32 off 36), and Nehal Wadhera (46 off 41), formed a good partnership to stabilize the innings. Later, Tim David came in and contributed runs to the board, scoring 35 off 18 balls, including 1 maximum and 3 fours. For LSG, Mohsin Khan picked up two wickets, while Marcus Stoinis, Naveen-ul-Haq, Mayank Yadav, and Ravi Bishnoi claimed one each.

The new ball bowlers dismissed Rohit Sharma (4 off 5) and Suryakumar Yadav (10 off 6) cheaply. Tilak Varma was run out for 7 off 11, and India's vice-captain, Hardik Pandya, was dismissed for a duck. Mohammad Nabi also couldn't contribute much as he departed for 1 off 2, while Gerald Coetzee remained not out for 1 off 2 as well.

As for LSG, they will be without the services of Quinton de Kock. Arshin Kulkarni, who was part of the U19 World Cup India squad, has been drafted into the team.
